Many studies have been conducted in major university departments across the U.S. For example, one study in 2004 at Georgetown University, Washington D. C. published in the Journal of Medicine found that the major component hydroxycitric acid was safe and useful for weight loss. A clinical study over eight weeks on 60 volunteers who were given daily doses of hydroxycitric acid showed significant weight loss. They received 2800mg of in three equal doses 30 to 60 minutes before meals. The researches measured body weight, body mass (BMI), lipid profiles, serum leptin, serotonin and excretion of urinary fat metabolites at 0, 4, and 8 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks the researches found a decrease in body weight of 5.4% and of 5.2% in BMI. Food intake, total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides and serum leptin levels were significantly reduced, while HDL and serotonin levels, and excretion of urinary fat metabolites (a biomarker of fat oxidation) increased, respectively. They found no evidence of negative side effects in the human subjects. The study concluded that HCA is safe and efficacious for weight management when taken before meals in a proper dosage.
